Our Impact

Real stories of transformation, restored hope, and communities learning to embrace mental health. Every life touched is proof that change is possible.

"Mental illness robs us of the essence of our personality and what makes us human. Our mission is to restore that essence — through education, support, and the restoration of hope."

Stories of Hope

These are illustrative stories of the kind of impact HIMI is working to achieve. Every story represents a life that can be transformed through proper mental health care and community support.

Recovering Hope

I was lost — not just on the streets, but inside myself. HIMI gave me back my mind, my dignity, and my family.

Recovering Hope

From Wandering the Streets to Reuniting with Family

A young man found wandering the streets of Maiduguri was brought to the attention of HIMI by community members. Through our rehabilitation programme, he received psychiatric evaluation, medication, and ongoing counselling. Within months, he was stable and able to reunite with his family. Today, he is reintegrating into his community with continued support from our self-help group.

A Caregiver's Relief

For years I felt alone, guilty, and overwhelmed caring for my son. The caregivers group showed me I am not alone, and it is not my fault.

A Caregiver's Relief

Finding Support Through the Darkest Times

A mother caring for her adult son with schizophrenia struggled in silence for years, fearing judgement from neighbours and relatives. Through HIMI's caregivers self-help group, she found a community of families facing similar challenges. She learned coping strategies, accessed support for her son's treatment, and found relief from the isolation and guilt that had consumed her.

Breaking the Silence

We used to think it was a curse. Now we understand it is an illness — and that there is treatment and hope.

Breaking the Silence

A Community Learns the Truth About Mental Illness

In a rural community where mental illness was widely attributed to spiritual causes, HIMI conducted a public health education campaign. Through workshops, community dialogues, and engagement with religious and traditional leaders, the community gained a new understanding of mental illness. Families began seeking proper treatment instead of traditional remedies, and the stigma around mental health started to lift.
